Early on Saturday morning when few are awake except for the birds, the bird count started. From the apartment window, balcony or own plot. Longer than that you could not walk at the bird watching. Niklas Aronsson in Torslanda was one of those who set the clock and went up at dawn.

- Already at 05.43 I had got 30 species together. By then it had been half an hour, says Niklas Aronsson, who is an ornithologist and involved in Birdlife Sweden (formerly the Swedish ornithological association) who was behind the arrangement.

Surprised at the result

He had just moved on his patio or stood out on the lawn on his own plot. Another year, there had been plenty of bird-interested people at Öland's southern headland this time of year. But now there are other times in the bird-interested world as well.

- You are surprised how much you can actually discover and experience in a completely ordinary garden in this way, says Niklas Aronsson, who after a few hours more of bird watching could count to 55 species.
