The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, yesterday reorganized the dome of the Ministry of Health after the resignation of the director of Public Health, Yolanda Fuentes, and placed the former medical director of the provisional Hospital of Ifema, Antonio Zapatero, at in front of a new vice-ministry of Public Health and the Covid-19 Plan, which will coordinate the management of the pandemic. Zapatero will also assume the powers of socio-health care in Madrid residences , a role played by the Minister of Social Policies, Alberto Reyero (Cs), and will be a key part of the strategy to exit the coronavirus crisis, with which Fuentes disagreed. In addition, it will be in charge of changing the different phases of de-escalation and epidemiological studies.

"Today is a good day for us because we have reoriented the Ministry of Health and they are not decisions that are made in half an hour," Ayuso said yesterday in an interview in Cuatro to separate the decision of Fuentes's resignation and in which he stressed that Nearly 4,000 patients with only 16 deaths have passed through the hands of Zapatero at the Ifema Hospital. "He is a person who has also always acted with great professionalism and knows the Covid-19 like no other," he defended. " Now that the coronavirus is going to be with us for a while, that we are going to have to learn to live with it, I want to reinforce the study of the epidemic in residences and everything will be under Zapatero's umbrella," stressed the president.

Graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Complutense University, Zapatero was currently carrying out his professional work as head of Internal Medicine service at the University Hospital of Fuenlabrada. In addition, he has worked at the Ramón y Cajal University Hospital, the Móstoles Hospital, the Alcorcón Hospital Foundation or the Axarquía Hospital.

With a "long professional career and extensive knowledge of health in Madrid", he is full professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Rey Juan Carlos University and University Expert in Management of Clinical Units, as well as president of the Federation of Spanish Scientific Medical Associations.

As stated in the Transparency Portal of the Community of Madrid, a vice-councilor receives 97,277.40 euros a year.
