Libya: Haftar forces bombed the residence of the Turkish and Italian ambassadors

Al-Jazeera correspondent in Tripoli reported that two security personnel were killed and two others wounded in the indiscriminate shelling of the forces of retired Major General Khalifa Haftar that struck the surroundings of the residence of the Italian and Turkish ambassadors in the capital Tripoli, and Rome strongly condemned this bombing.

Al-Jazeera correspondent stated that Libyan Foreign Minister Mohamed El-Taher Siala had contacted the Italian ambassadors Giuseppe Puccini and the Turkish Serhat Axin to check on them, and Siala strongly condemned what he called the criminal bombing.

The Libyan Foreign Ministry said that the bombing of Haftar's forces was near the residence of the Italian and Turkish ambassadors, which is in violation of international law and international humanitarian law, which call for the protection of diplomatic missions.

Anatolia news agency reported that the bombing launched by Haftar forces on Thursday with rocket-propelled grenades targeted the Zawiyah Dahmani area in the center of the capital, killing three people and wounding four others, including security personnel.

The media advisor to the Ministry of Health stated that among the dead were two security personnel belonging to the Ministry of the Interior who were carrying out the process of securing the area as diplomatic because it contained a number of foreign embassies, including the Turkish and Italian embassies.

The same source added that among the wounded was another security member who was seriously injured, and a volunteer in the Libyan Red Crescent teams while carrying out their duties in the region.

A statement issued by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs at dawn on Friday expressed its strong condemnation of the missile attack launched by Haftar forces Thursday on a number of areas in Tripoli. The Italian Foreign Ministry added that the attack killed at least two people in the area where the Italian ambassador resides.

Earlier on Thursday, the media center for Operation Volcano Anger of the internationally recognized Al-Wefaq government said that Haftar's forces also bombed areas near the Maitika International Airport in Tripoli, as well as the Tripoli sea port, and the bombing of those areas did not cause any casualties.

"The Russians are working with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to transport fighters, perhaps from a third country, and perhaps from the Syrians to Libya, in addition to equipment," the US special envoy to Syria, Jim Jeffrey, told a conference call on Thursday. . The US envoy did not give further details.

A confidential UN report, seen by Reuters on Wednesday, indicated that the mercenaries of the Russian private military company Wagner deployed about 1,200 personnel in Libya to reinforce the forces of retired Major General Khalifa Haftar.
