A lane will be reserved for bikes and public transport on the boulevards in Bordeaux - Mickaël Bosredon / 20 Minutes

  • The municipality and Bordeaux Métropole say they want to avoid an excessive increase in autosolism at the time of deconfinement.
  • For this they rely on telework, and set up 50 km for bikes.
  • Several major pedestrian routes in the center of Bordeaux will also be reorganized.

Development of public space, and reopening of several establishments. Bordeaux Métropole and the city of Bordeaux presented their return to business plan on Thursday, which will take effect from May 11.

On transport and travel, "the objective is to avoid autolism" (the fact of traveling alone by car) warns the president of Bordeaux Métropole, Patrick Bobet. However, the recovery in public transport will only take place gradually. This is why 50 km of dedicated bicycle lanes have been developed, in particular on the boulevards with the widening of dedicated bicycle lanes, to create bus / bicycle lanes which will be marked in yellow.

"These are temporary improvements but can be installed over time", says the mayor of Bordeaux Nicolas Florian. The two elected officials also bet a lot on maintaining telework, which will be developed in their own communities, and in businesses. Thalès in Mérignac, which weighs nearly 3,000 jobs, should therefore favor teleworking until September.

Always "to avoid a massive influx of cars into the city center" parking will again be charged from May 11.

Wearing a mask on Sainte-Catherine Street

On the thorny question of wearing a mask in certain places of the city, Nicolas Florian maintains that it will be compulsory in rue Sainte-Catherine and rue Porte-Dijeaux, as of Monday. A decree will be taken in this direction. At the beginning of the week, the prefecture had told us that there would be no obligation. Rue Sainte-Catherine will also be completely refurbished, with two side aisles on the sides to organize the queues in front of the shops, and a central lane reserved for strolling.

"The truth of the day is not that of the next day, and we must be flexible" justifies the mayor of Bordeaux to explain certain fluctuations in the decisions. Regarding the docks, it was finally stopped that they would be reopened on May 11, but without the obligation to wear a mask for the moment.

“I recommend adapting to the situation, and the criteria that are transmitted to us show that we are in a situation of withdrawal from the disease in the department. There is less circulation of the virus than elsewhere. The opening of the quays along the Garonne therefore seems to me now possible, as long as the situation is stabilized. People are going to need to get out, and there will be floor markings with three lanes that will be drawn: one for bikes, one for joggers and one for walkers. And everyone will have to respect distances of one meter. "

"The real test will be the weekend of May 16-17"

If Nicolas Florian admits to having noticed "a certain form of relaxation" these last days in the streets of the city, he assures that "people do not mix. In any case, if the situation becomes unmanageable on the quays, "there will be the possibility of closing them again, or of making the wearing of the mask compulsory." The mask will not be mandatory either in parks and gardens. "But I will do points regularly on the evolution of the attitude of the public," warns the mayor of Bordeaux, who considers that "the real test will be the weekend of May 16-17. "

To support these measures, "we have planned to install 75 hydroalcoholic gel dispensers throughout the city".

A campaign in favor of local tourism

Several public services will reopen, notably the libraries, "and we hope to reopen the Cité du Vin and the Musée de la Mer, like most cultural establishments, from June 2," says Nicolas Florian.

Finally, the mayor of Bordeaux says he is working "on a massive communication campaign in favor of local tourism" and indicates "that there will be entertainment during the summer in the city. "
