On the 6th, the Ministry of Transport of China established an expert working group to guide the Humen Bridge to conduct further inspections on the bridge. On the evening of the 6th, the famous bridge expert Wu Mingyuan answered questions from reporters at the Humen Bridge Management Center.

  Wu Mingyuan said that the jitter of the Humen Bridge has basically subsided. According to the current test results, the vortex vibration has not affected the overall structure of the Humen Bridge.

  The opinion of our expert meeting last night that this is caused by vortex vibration, there will be two kinds of vibration of the suspension bridge, one will affect the comfort, called vortex vibration, and the other will affect the safety of the bridge, called flutter, this time It is mainly the occurrence of vortex vibration that affects comfort. It should be said that this vortex vibration will not have a large impact on the bridge structure.

  [Commentary] On the same day, the reporter saw from the surveillance video of the Humen Bridge Management Center that at 15:50 on May 5, the staff began to withdraw the water horses along the side rails of the bridge, which was completed at 17:42.

  The water horse caused the streamlined steel box girder to passivate, which caused this vortex vibration. Now we see that after the vortex vibration occurs, the entire structure is safe. After the water horse is withdrawn, we now see that the structure has also become calmer. There is not much vibration on the bridge now.

  [Explanation] Wu Mingyuan said that the Humen Bridge is a large suspension bridge with a main span of 888 meters and weighs more than 15,000 tons. After vibration, it needs enough time to calm down.

  It is not the same as the Tacoma Strait Bridge. The flutter that occurs in the Tacoma Strait Bridge is caused by structural design at high wind speeds. Vortex vibrations are caused by low wind speeds. As everyone knows, this The wind speed is about ten meters per second. This is the case, so there is a very big difference between the two bridges.

  [Explanation] As to whether the Humen Bridge is overloaded, Wu Mingyuan said that it is safe to operate within the bridge load test standards. Recently, the Humen Bridge has imposed restrictions on vehicles such as large trucks, which is relatively safe.

The Humen Bridge started construction in 1992 and was opened to traffic in 1997. It is China's first truly large-scale modern suspension bridge.
