The Iraqi Parliament on Wednesday approved the appointment of former intelligence chief Mustafa al Kazemi as the new prime minister and ended five months of interim Adel Abdelmahadi, who had resigned on November 29.

The fragmented Iraqi parliament backed Al Kazemi and 15 ministers from the new government cabinet and postponed the approval of the foreign and oil ministers.

The new prime minister assumes in the midst of a deep economic, political and institutional crisis after months of protests in which more than half a thousand people have died, and in the midst of the health emergency as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. EFE
