According to the document, the purchase of special ammunition and weapons systems (SAWS) is necessary for the US Department of Defense, other US departments and foreign allies "for the purpose of conducting tests and exercises, as well as combat use."

For the purposes of this procurement, the terms SAWS and “munitions that do not comply with NATO standards” refer mainly to munitions and weapons that are produced and used by the countries of the former USSR or the Eastern bloc.

As stated in the application, the U.S. Army Contractor Relations Office plans to conclude a five-year contract with several suppliers with an undefined delivery date for the purchase and delivery of ammunition and weapons systems to locations in the continental United States and beyond.

Previously, the Pentagon placed an application for the purchase of supplies for weapons that are not used in NATO, including for Kalashnikov assault rifles, Tokarev and Makarov pistols.
