Quebec has announced that it will postpone the opening of stores in Montreal for a week, originally scheduled for May 11. While they were able to reopen this Monday in the rest of the French-speaking province, Quebec Premier François Legault decided to backtrack for those located in the Montreal region.

Quebec is the province most affected by the coronavirus. It lists more than half of the approximately 3,900 deaths and 66,000 cases in Canada, the vast majority in metropolitan Quebec, the epicenter of the epidemic in the country.

The opening of schools in suspense

"I am announcing that we have decided to postpone the opening of businesses in the greater Montreal region, for a week now. So from May 11, we postpone to May 18, "said François Legault to the press. The decision to postpone the deconfinement to Montreal was taken because of the insufficient number of beds available in hospitals and the risk that the end of confinement would lead to an increase in hospitalizations, he explained.

For the same reason, the Prime Minister did not rule out a postponement of the opening of primary schools and daycare centers in Montreal, scheduled for May 19, eight days after the other regions of Quebec. A decision will be made within "two weeks" depending on the evolution of the situation, he said. To date, Quebec is the only province in Canada to have decided to reopen its primary schools by the end of the school year in June.
