May 05, 2020 Airbnb is laying off 1,900 employees, equal to a quarter of its workforce. The decision was necessary to deal with the crisis related to the coronavirus pandemic which is expected to more than halve the revenues of the leading short-term rent portal in 2020 compared to 2019.The measure adds to the cut in marketing expenses and the freezing of new hires decided at the beginning of the epidemic.
"The Airbnb business has been hit hard," admitted the CEO, Brian Chesky in a statement. Dismissed employees will receive 14 weeks' salary and additional shock absorbers based on their role and location. For those operating in the US there will be another 12 months of health coverage, for others the coverage will be extended until the end of the year.
