Bordeaux, rue Sainte-Catherine, April 9, 2020, during confinement - Mickaël Bosredon / 20 Minutes

  • The traffic on Sainte-Catherine Street will be completely reorganized, with rubalises on the ground in particular.
  • The president of the association La Ronde des Quartier requests that the wearing of a mask be compulsory in all businesses.
  • Several merchants also wish to be able to open Sundays during the coming months.

A completely reorganized Sainte-Catherine street, fitted out shops… “Everyone is working hard to be ready on May 11” says the president of the Bordeaux merchants' association La Ronde des quartier, Christian Baulme, who impatiently awaits May 11 to restart the activity. "There is a lot of waiting around this May 11, we will have to be up to it" warns for his part the president of the CCI of Bordeaux Patrick Seguin. "It is the day of hope, even if faced with constraints, all the traders will not be able to reopen as of the 11th." The moment of truth for many, will be moreover rather the weekend of May 16, with the expected return of customers. In the meantime, here is what you need to know about the organization that is being put in place before the start of deconfinement.

Towards the wearing of the mandatory mask in all shops? The merchant will have the right to impose the wearing of the mask, "and it will have to be done because it is essential, whether in a shopping center or a shop in the city center," maintains Christian Baulme, president of the association of traders from La Ronde des Quartier. Very few traders will be able to respect the rule of social distancing without wearing a mask, so you have to impose the mask. "

Traffic on Sainte-Catherine Street will be completely reorganized.  Even if it was a wish of the mayor Nicolas Florian, the response of the prefecture on this subject is clear: the wearing of the mask will not be compulsory in rue Sainte-Catherine. On the other hand, the density of population which usually borrows the big commercial artery of Bordeaux, poses many constraints. "There will be tapes against the façades which will materialize the waiting areas before entering the shops," reveals Christian Baulme. The central lane of the street will be reserved for walking. Deliveries will also have to be completed at 11 a.m., and we are awaiting a decree which will prohibit the circulation of bikes and scooters. As for the open-air shopping center at La promenade Sainte-Catherine, traffic directions will be set up, with one entrance via rue Sainte-Catherine and one exit via rue Porte Dijeaux, to avoid crossings.

Free distribution of deconfinement kits for traders. The CCI announced that it would proceed on Wednesday with the distribution of 900 experimental kits to traders in Bordeaux, Langon and Libourne. In each package there will be paper masks for the merchant and his collaborators, a bottle of hydroalcoholic gel, and marking tapes on the ground to enforce health safety distances. "Traders must leave 4 m2 free per customer, recalls Patrick Seguin, which means that in some shops there will be only one customer at the same time. The CCI envisages a wider distribution of these kits as a second step, depending on demand.

Authorization to open Sundays for several months? Many traders are asking for a postponement of the sales period to September, which will have to go through a decree. "Some traders also ask for the possibility of opening Sundays for a few months," says Patrick Seguin. In Bordeaux, as we are within the perimeter of a tourist town, we are entitled to 12 Sundays per year, but we asked for a waiver to open without constraint. We also demand free parking for cars, and free public transport, every weekend, as well as the creation of free parking lots. "

What about large shopping centers? A single shopping center in Gironde will not be able to reopen its doors from May 11, it is Bordeaux-Lac, "because it is the only one that exceeds 40,000 m2, explains Patrick Seguin. What also penalizes him is the presence of Ikea which attracts a lot of people who come from far away, but we must avoid the flow of people who would come from far enough. All the others can reopen, with constraints of course.

What about cafes and restaurants? The CHR (Café-Hôtellerie-Restauration) sector is currently not authorized to reopen. "But we see the day of June 2 dawning for the possible opening of the beaches and all that goes around, analyzes Patrick Seguin. This is in any case the orientation of the prefecture, if the number of cases of Covid-19 remains stable or continues to decrease. "
