Syrian air defenses thwarted an Israeli missile attack on a research center and military base in the northern province of Aleppo, the official media said on Monday, in the second such raid in less than a week.

The Syrian army said in a statement that Israel had struck a military barracks in the ambassador in the northern countryside of Aleppo, and state television had previously stated that a research center had been attacked.

Reuters quoted intelligence sources as saying that Israeli helicopters fired several missiles from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights against targets inside southern Syria, known to be the center of the militants of the Lebanese Hezbollah group.

An observatory observing the war in Syria and intelligence sources said that an Israeli strike was believed to be the cause of major explosions in an ammunition depot near the city of Homs the same day.

Reuters also quoted my intelligence source in the region as saying that Israel is intensifying its raids in Syria at a time when the world and the region, including Syria, are interested in fighting the Corona virus.

And it has been attributed to Western intelligence sources that armed factions backed by Iran have been stationed in Aleppo province for a while, and that they have bases and command centers, in the context of a growing presence in the government-controlled areas in Syria.

In recent years, Israel has acknowledged that it has carried out numerous raids inside Syria since the beginning of the civil war in 2011, as it sees the presence of Iran as a strategic threat.

And Israeli Defense Minister Naftali Bennett told Israeli media last week that Israel would intensify its campaign against Iran in Syria.
