In total Amazon wanted to lay off 10,000 workers in France, a device which benefits companies that have partially or entirely suspended their activities because of the coronavirus. For this the American giant had made the request Thursday to the Ministry of Employment. The latter refused.

For the French administration, the closure of Amazon's French sites "  is not linked to a drop in activity but to a court decision  ". In fact in mid-April, French justice forced the company to reduce its activities and allowed it to deliver only essential products, such as food or medical products.

Justice has forced Amazon, under penalty of fine, to make as requested by the unions, an assessment of health risks facing the coronavirus. The company preferred to suspend all activity for its warehouses in France since April 16 until May 5 inclusive, hence its request for partial unemployment.
