A Logroño prisoner is found hanged who entered the prison after skipping the confinement 16 times

A 40-year-old man has been found dead by hanging in the Logroño prison, where he was admitted after having skipped confinement 16 times during the state of alarm due to the coronavirus crisis and on one of them he was caught with drugs hidden in his socks.

Sources of Penitentiary Institutions have indicated to Efe this Monday that the body was found at 17:40 hours yesterday, Sunday, in the cell occupied by this person, a neighbor of Logroño and for whom the judicial authority had decreed his provisional detention, communicated and without bail.

This man, who entered the penitentiary center of the Riojan capital on the 20th day and who was in sanitary isolation for the 14 days of quarantine, spoke from the window of his cell with an inmate who was in the courtyard.

It seemed to this inmate that he was saying inconsistent things and alerted a prison official, who immediately went to the cell and found the prisoner hanging with a sheet from the radiator.

For 25 minutes an attempt was made to revive him, which was not possible and his death was certified.

The Logroño Guard Court has accepted the case and Penitentiary Institutions has opened an investigation into what happened.

The deceased, who already entered the Logroño prison in 2018, did not have the anti-suicide protocol applied since it was not possible to be accompanied by another inmate due to the sanitary isolation by the coronavirus and to be passing the 14-day quarantine.

On April 22, the Civil Guard in La Rioja detailed, in a note, the arrest for the second time of this man for serious disobedience, denounced 16 times since the start of the state of alarm and intercepted, on that occasion, in Villamediana from Iregua, about 6 kilometers from Logroño, when he was traveling in a car accompanied by a woman and with drugs hidden in his socks.
