A first documented case in France of a cat contaminated with Covid-19 , probably by its owners, has led investigators who have studied it to ask patients to limit contact with these pets to protect them.

The National Veterinary School of Alfort (EnvA) advises this Saturday in a statement that cat owners when they have become contaminated with the coronavirus, in addition to limiting these contacts, put on a mask when they are with them and wash their hands before petting them. .

The joint virology unit of EnvA, the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Work Health Safety (Anses) and the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRAE), associated with the Pasteur Institute, have detected a cat near Paris that has been diagnosed positive.

The animal, which presented clinical respiratory and digestive signs, is the fourth case of this type documented in the world so far, and it was infected "probably by its owners".

The researchers recall that cats are not considered Covid-19 vectors and that, with the knowledge available, "there is no evidence that companion or farm animals have an epidemiological role in the spread of the virus."
