01 May 2020 A prisoner from San Vittore prison has died at the "San Paolo" hospital in Milan, where he had been hospitalized since 12 April. This was announced by the Guarantor of persons deprived of their liberty, Mauro Palma.

The 54-year-old man had contracted the virus in the institution and had been transferred to the hospital as soon as the symptoms appeared, with an operation that formally released him.

At the moment 159 prisoners are infected (an increasing number) while 215 prison officers are positive at Covid-19.

Currently there are 53,187 prisoners in total, the Guarantor said, who underlines how the trend, as regards the overall number of prisoners, despite being decreasing, leaves unchanged the urgent need for a "further boost so that it is possible, in terms of areas of management and protection of the health of those who work in the institutes and those who are hosted there, have sufficient possibilities to face any possible negative development of the contagion trend ".
