Singapore saw the largest drop in employment since the 2003 SARS in the first quarter of this year due to the Corona 19 crisis.

According to local media and foreign media such as CNA broadcast on the 30th, the Singapore Ministry of Manpower reported that the total number of jobs excluding foreign domestic workers decreased by 1,900 in the first quarter.

This was the largest decline since 24,000 jobs in the second quarter of SARS in 2003, the ministry said.

The main reason for the decline in employment is the reduced number of foreigners working in Singapore, the Ministry of Manpower explained.

He added that the majority of the jobs that were reduced came from food and beverage, retail and tourism-dependent lodgings, which were expected to be most severely affected by the Corona 19 crisis.

The Ministry of Manpower also said that the unemployment rate in the first quarter rose from 2.3% in the fourth quarter to 2.4% in the first quarter of last year, the highest number since the third quarter of 2009 during the financial crisis.

In the wake of Corona19, the labor market is likely to worsen in the second quarter, the Ministry of Manpower warned.

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Shen-Long mentioned earlier that in mid-February, the economic impact of the Corona 19 crisis in Singapore has already surpassed SARS in 2003.

"The current situation will have a major impact on the Singapore economy for the next two quarters," Lee said.
