During the spring, according to official measurements, the rivers in the Czech Republic have dropped to levels considerably lower than in the corresponding period in recent years, which have also been affected by drought.

"The period of drought that the country has experienced since 2015 is the worst in the last 500 years," write experts and scientists linked to Intersucho, a scientific body focused on drought, on the agency's Twitter.

And also environment minister Brabec obviously thinks the situation is very difficult. He tells the Czech media that the situation is disastrous.

Last year, 99.5 percent of the Czech Republic was affected by the drought, which caused crop losses of the equivalent of just over SEK 4.3 billion, according to the country's agricultural chambers.

Have called for crisis meeting

Brabec blames the extreme drought on "the decrease in precipitation volume, the rise in the average temperature and the increased evaporation and a longer growing season".

Even this year's summer is expected to be dry and the minister has called for a crisis meeting on May 12 with regional and local executives, among other things, to ensure the availability of drinking water.

Also in neighboring Poland, the situation is difficult and the authorities there say that the water supply corresponds to that in Egypt.
