The European Commission today proposed to allocate 211.7 million euros from the EU Solidarity Fund for Italy for the floods and landslides of October and November 2019 and for the flooding of Venice.

The EU executive proposed a package of 279 million for Portugal, Spain, Italy and Austria, to assist populations from various regions hit by natural disasters last year.

"We are going through a period in which European solidarity is more important than ever", said the Commissioner for Cohesion, Elisa Ferreira: "The EU Solidarity Fund is one of the most concrete expressions of this solidarity. While committing ourselves to overcome with the greatest possible safety of the Coronavirus pandemic, we continue to show solidarity with citizens affected by other catastrophes, such as last year's natural disasters. "

The aid package is divided as follows: 211.7 million for Italy due to the flooding of Venice and other extreme climatic events; 56.7 million will go to Spain for the floods in the regions of Valencia, Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia in September 2019; 8.2 million to Portugal for damages from hurricane Lorenzo in October 2019; 2.3 million to Austria in bad weather in November 2019i

The Commission proposal for assistance via the EU Solidarity Fund will now have to be approved by the European Parliament and the Council.
