China News Service, Beijing, April 30 (Reporter Sun Zifa) Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Academy of Sciences) April 30, the annual list of the 2020 Natural Index officially released that day showed that the Chinese Academy of Sciences once again ranked first in the world. According to the previously published Natural Index data, the Chinese Academy of Sciences has ranked first in the ranking for eight consecutive years and achieved "eight consecutive championships."

The newly released Natural Index list is based on the statistical data from January 1 to December 31, 2019, and shows the high-quality scientific research output of different countries and scientific research institutions in the field of natural science. The list shows that the Chinese Academy of Sciences contributed 2.8% of the total share of the natural index in the global ranking of scientific research institutions, which is twice that of the second-ranked Harvard University in the United States. The subject area continues to rank first, and ranks fifth in the world in life sciences.

The latest natural index of the global scientific research institutions ranked third to tenth in order: German Max Planck, French National Research Center, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Helmholtz National Research Center Association, China University of Science and Technology, Oxford University, Peking University. Among them, the adjusted contribution share of the University of Science and Technology of China increased by 25.6%, and the ranking was greatly increased to the eighth place, ranking among the top ten in the world for the first time.

The 2020 Natural Index annual list also adds institutions' "Rising Star" list, tracking the growth of high-quality scientific research output from institutions from 2015 to 2019. China dominates the list, and all of the top 44 institutions "Rising Star" come from China. Among them, the adjusted contribution share of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences increased by 242%, ranking first in the fastest increase, and the University of Science and Technology of China, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tsinghua University, and Sun Yat-sen University ranked the second to fifth fastest-growing institutions.

It is understood that the natural index is an indicator of the scientific research performance of institutions, and there are currently 82 natural science journals included in the natural index statistics. The natural index currently mainly uses two research methods for calculating the number of papers and shares. Among them, the number of papers means that no matter whether there is one or more authors in an article, each author ’s country / region or institution is awarded 1 point; The share aims to reflect the relative contribution of each paper author.
