American screenwriter David Simon confirmed on Thursday that a new program involving the cast of his hit series "The Wire" - and also taking place in Baltimore - was in preparation, but said it would not be a suite.

David Simon, author of critically acclaimed series like "Treme" or "The Plot Against America", thus confirmed the information given by the writer George Pelecanos, co-writer of "The Wire", to the French magazine Society.

"With David Simon and Ed Burns (the producer of the series, editor's note), we started to write a new project on Baltimore which will bring together all the actors of the series + The Wire +," said the writer, adding that this new project would focus "on the city police who, in recent years, have had to deal with several large-scale corruption cases in its ranks".

Asked on Twitter about the announcement, David Simon, who still lives in Baltimore, confirmed that the project was "real" but said it would not be a sequel.

Broadcast on the American channel HBO between 2002 and 2008, "The Wire" ("On listening" in French) is widely regarded as one of the best series of all time.

Shot in Baltimore, a city in the state of Maryland ravaged by crime and poverty, it follows police officers trying to dismantle drug trafficking networks and their interactions with circles such as politics or the education system.

The series has often been praised for its realism - David Simon is a former journalist - and the finesse of his analysis of American society.
