US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Wednesday that he has already started making plans to reopen his embassy in Caracas, although he assured that this will not happen until conditions are "safe" .

"I asked my team last week to have our plans ready for when the day comes," Pompeo said at a round table with a small group of media, including Efe.

Pompeo's goal is for everything to be prepared so that when "democracy returns" to Venezuela, Venezuelans know that "physically the Americans are with them", and considered that "raising the American flag over the embassy in Caracas will be a great symbol of that. "

Pompeo did not offer details on when that reopening could occur and his announcement has great symbolic content, since it shows the optimism of the US Administration about the exit from power of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Washington has been without diplomatic representation in Venezuela since mid-March 2019 , when Maduró cut diplomatic ties with the United States after this country recognized Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela, who has received the support of more than fifty nations.

Maduro continues to have the support of other countries such as China, Russia and Iran.

In this regard, Pompeo assured that several planes of the Iranian airline Mahan Air, the second largest in the country, have provided supplies whose origin is "unknown" to the "regime" of Maduro and urged that company to stop its flights to Venezuela.

"Those flights must stop and countries must do their part to deny that the flights stop, in the same way that many have denied landing rights to this airline," said Pompeo.

Under the Barack Obama government (2009-2017), the US sanctioned Mahan Air in 2011, considering that it provides financial and technological support to terrorist groups allegedly sponsored by Tehran.

Since Donald Trump's arrival at the White House in January 2017, the bilateral relationship with Venezuela and Iran has been strained. In the case of Tehran, the deterioration came after Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and re-imposed all the sanctions that had been lifted then.

Regarding Venezuela, the United States was the first country in the world to recognize Guaidó in January 2019 as the head of state of Venezuela and, since then, has led an international campaign to depose Maduro through the imposition of sanctions.
