It is now during April and May that many fish species seek up rivers and streams to play. And with the fauna passage in central Västerås, it is the first time since 1891 that the fish can travel further up the Svartån river, past the turbine bridge. And now you can see if the passage really works properly.

- Now we see that the fishermen are starting to hike up in Svartån and in the past few weeks a lot has happened, says Susanna Hansen, water coordinator at Västerås City.

Aspen going up

Aspen is one of the target species for the project, it is red listed and the hope is to get many asparagus through the passage so it can play upstream in Svartån.

- We have seen several very large asparagus passing through the fish camera these days, in fact the largest asparagus I have seen in any fish counter, a female of 95 cm and one of 85 cm and it is incredibly gratifying, says Johan Lind, project manager at Mälarenergi.

So far, 5-10 asparagus have passed, and especially the large females that go up and play are incredibly important to the stock in Mälaren with the large amount of rum and then the fish fry they can generate.

Watch the fish swim up

You can follow the life of the fishing route through a website where there are films on the giant asparagus and other overlooked fish. So far, in addition to the aspen, roach, pike and river neon-ey have also been featured on the films.
