The coach of the French football team Didier Deschamps praised Tuesday the memory of the former player and coach of Saint-Etienne Robert Herbin, who died Monday at 81, presenting him as a "very great personality of our sport".

"To evoke Robert Herbin is to evoke the legend of the Greens, one of the most beautiful chapters in the history of French football. I want to salute the memory of this very great personality of our sport, who disappeared yesterday (Monday) in Saint -Etienne, a city he had flooded with happiness and pride, "Deschamps wrote in a statement.

Hospitalized for a week for serious cardiac and pulmonary insufficiencies, unrelated to the pandemic of new coronavirus, Herbin furnished as coach the trophy cupboard of Saint-Etienne, which he hoisted in the final of the European Cup against the Bayern Munich.

"I was only seven years old, in May 1976, when AS Saint-Etienne lost to Glasgow in the final of the European Cup of champion clubs, the equivalent, then, of the Champions League, after a course that had fascinated the whole of France, "praised" DD ", also a finalist in the Champions League as a coach, with Monaco in 2004.

"Like many French people, I have kept in memory some memories of this epic, the parade on the Champs-Elysées the day after the lost final in particular. Saint-Etienne had then won the heart of the country", concluded the boss of 2018 world champions.
