Today, Tuesday, the Egyptian authorities decided to extend the state of emergency throughout the country for a period of 3 months.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi issued Resolution No. 168 of 2020 declaring a state of emergency throughout the country for a period of three months, starting at one in the morning, today, Tuesday, April 28, 2020.

This is the 12th extension of the decision to declare a nationwide state of emergency issued in April 2017.

The decision has been published in the Official Gazette, and it is awaiting the approval of Parliament and publication in the Official Gazette again until it becomes effective, and Parliament has not rejected any previous extension.

According to Al-Jazeera correspondent Khaled Al-Masry, the second article of the decision stipulates that the armed forces and the police force take what is necessary to confront "the dangers and financing of terrorism", maintain security in all parts of the country, protect public and private property, and save the lives of citizens.

The reporter said that the decision indicated that the imposition of a state of emergency in all parts of the country "comes due to the dangerous security conditions the country is going through."

Article 4 of the decision stipulates that anyone who violates orders issued by the President of the Republic to implement the provisions of Law No. 162 of 1985 referred to is imprisonment.

On April 10, 2017, Parliament approved the declaration of a 3-month state of emergency to "confront the dangers of terrorism and its financing" in response to two attacks targeting two churches in the north of the country at the time, which killed at least 45 people, and were adopted by ISIS.

Under the state of emergency, areas of evacuation, a curfew and other measures may be imposed.
