  • With confinement, Nantes charities note the arrival of new beneficiaries.
  • In addition to that granted by the State, the city of Nantes will pay financial aid to 7,500 families.

"The crisis has revealed the great fragility of part of the population, which is normally invisible when things are going well. This is the observation made in recent days by the volunteers of Restos du Coeur de Loire-Atlantique, which has increased its pace to manufacture and package already more than 46,000 meals since mid-March. “This Monday was our biggest day with 1,325 bags distributed, that is to say nearly 4,000 meals, reports Jacky Lépron, the vice-president. With confinement, we see people who come from other associations but also new people, whose budget is impacted by partial unemployment or because their fixed-term contract has not been renewed. There are also those who managed to manage at first but for whom it is too hard now, like the students. "

Other charities unfortunately face the same phenomenon. "In Loire-Atlantique, the food bank delivers seven tonnes of food per week, compared to five usually, to some 12,000 beneficiaries," said regional prefect Claude d'Harcourt. This crisis hits the most precarious hard. "Same story with the Secours populaire which indicates that it has brought food aid to Nantes since mid-March to 3,720 people," half of whom are not known to the association "so far.

In Nantes, aid of 100 euros per family

By mid-May, in Loire-Atlantique, 14 million euros will be exceptionally paid to about 65,000 families among the poorest, mainly through the CAF, announces the prefect. In Nantes, the mayor Johanna Rolland decided this weekend to expand this aid, by allocating the sum of 100 euros per child to nearly 7,500 families in Nantes. “The closure of the schools led to the suspension of an essential service in the daily life of parents and their children: school meals. (…), She justifies. The crisis that we have been going through for several weeks adds to this difficulty for families with modest incomes, so it seemed to me essential to accompany them to mitigate this. "

For the most precarious people, the prefecture announces that a system of service vouchers has been put in place and will concern 3,000 people or households in the Nantes region. More than 300,000 euros have already been paid in the form of coupons of 3.50 euros. Provided by the Samu social or through associations, they are valid for the purchase of foodstuffs and hygiene products of first necessity.
