It is a symbolic threshold that Russia has just crossed. By announcing 6,198 additional cases of contamination with the coronavirus in the space of 24 hours Monday, April 27, the country identifies a total of 87,147 cases of contamination since the beginning of the epidemic. A balance sheet higher than that of China, where the virus appeared in mid-December (82,830 cases).

The number of daily cases is down slightly compared to that announced Sunday, which amounted to 6,361, said the Russian crisis management center. Fifty additional deaths were also recorded in the space of 24 hours.

Containment until April 30

Containment measures came into force on March 25 in Russia, with the closure of most public spaces. They must be maintained until April 30, next Thursday, and Vladimir Putin has not yet announced what the Russian executive plans for the future.

But Anna Popova, who heads the federal consumer rights agency Rospotrebnadzor, said on television Monday that she expected the restrictions to remain in effect until May 12.

Prime Minister Mikhaïl Michoustine for his part asked his ministers to make proposals to him by Thursday on a partial easing of measures affecting businesses. As in other countries, many companies risk bankruptcy and thousands of jobs could be lost as a result of these measures.
