Retired Major-General Khalifa Hifter announced the suspension of the Skhirat political agreement, to become part of the past, and the mandate of the military establishment he heads to lead the country.

Haftar said - in a televised speech on Monday evening - "We are proud of the mandate of the Libyans for the general leadership of this historic mission in these exceptional circumstances, to stop the work of the political agreement so that it becomes part of the past by a decision of the Libyan people the source of powers, and we announce the response of the general leadership to the will of the people."

He stressed that the general leadership will be "at the disposal of the people, and will work to the best of its capabilities to relieve the suffering of it, and that the service of the citizen, the protection of his rights, the fulfillment of his aspirations, and the harnessing of resources for his benefit, will be at the forefront of priorities."

It is noteworthy that the political agreement was reached in the Moroccan city of Skhirat in 2015 under the auspices of the United Nations and included the parties to the conflict in Libya, to end the war that broke out in the country in 2014.

Last Thursday, Haftar called on the Libyans to drop the Skhirat Agreement and authorize the institution they deem fit to manage the country's affairs according to a constitutional declaration issued by it.
