Iyad Yahya Mubarak, deputy director of Socotra Airport in Yemen - Sunday evening - survived an assassination attempt by gunmen belonging to what is known as the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council, according to a local source.

The source said that the transitional gunmen had established a checkpoint near the airport, stopped him while he was leaving his workplace, and asked him to get out of his car as he was "wanted".

He added that the official refused to get off and drove his car, before he came under fire from the gunmen and chased a military vehicle until he reached a residential area.

The source indicated that this may be due to a request by the Deputy Director of Socotra Airport to guard the airport the day before to download the slogans of the Transitional Council, which rebel soldiers raised against the government.

On Saturday evening, the Southern Transitional Council announced - in a statement - self-administration in Aden and all of the southern governorates, amid a government refusal.
