Peru: Interior Minister resigns amid coronavirus crisis

The Peruvian Minister of the Interior surprised everyone on Friday, April 24, when he resigned from his post during the Covid-19 epidemic, when he was criticized for the large number of police officers infected with the coronavirus .

Carlos Moran, whose reasons for resignation have not been officially specified, has been replaced by Gaston Rodriguez, a police general appointed by the head of state Martin Vizcarra, announced the services of the presidency.

Over a thousand infected police officers

Of a total of 140,000 police officers, about 1,300 are infected with the virus and hospitalized, the police announced this week. In total, Peru has registered 21,648 cases of coronavirus and 634 deaths to date.

The South American country has been in containment since March 16 , which will last at least until May 10. It also closed its borders.

Carlos Moran, present in the Vizcarra government since October 2018 and one of its oldest members in office, is the second minister to leave his post since the declaration of the state of health emergency on March 16. On March 21, Minister of Health Elizabeth Hinostroza resigned.
