"We want to join our voices with those of the United Nations secretary general, Antonio Guterres, and his acting special representative for Libya, Stephanie Turco Williams, in their call for a humanitarian truce in Libya".

In a press release, the High Representative for the European Union's foreign and security policy, Josep Borrel, as well as the Foreign Ministers Jean-Yves Le Drian (France), Luigi di Maio (Italy), and Heiko Maas ( Germany), called on Saturday 25 April for a humanitarian truce in Libya. They urge all parties to the conflict to resume peace talks.

"A real cease-fire"

"We call on all Libyan actors to take inspiration from the spirit of Ramadan, to resume talks for a real cease-fire," the statement added.

For almost a year, the Libyan national army (ANL) of Marshal Khalifa Haftar, which controls the east of the country, has been trying to seize Tripoli with the support of the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Russia. The government of national understanding (GEN), recognized by the international community which sits in the capital, has obtained the support of Turkey.
