In the middle of the 19th century, downy mildew was the cause of the "potato famine" in Ireland. Will the coronavirus cause the bankruptcy of potato producers in Belgium? According to the Belgapom federation, which represents potato traders and processors, a million tonnes are already unsaleable, reports La Voix du Nord .

The containment which led to the closure of restaurants or the cancellation of summer festivals led to a decrease in the consumption of potatoes in Belgium. To save the sector and encourage Belgians to consume potatoes, the general secretary of Belgacom, Romain Cools, launched during a press conference: "We all eat fries twice instead of once a week" .

Belgapom will also package and make available to food banks 25 tonnes of potatoes per week until the end of May.
