SVT News Stockholm reported last winter about Erik Jaime who had difficulty finding a suitable stem cell donor because of his overseas origin. While waiting for a matching donor, he has been taking brake medication that has kept him alive.

Now he has found a match and is waiting for a transplant. It is something that feels both fantastic and unreal, he says, because the chance for him to find a donor was small. And the corona pandemic hasn't made it any easier for him either.

- Already we have encountered some problems as the donor stem cells deteriorated due to delays during the transport caused by Covid-19, which no one could say for sure, says Erik Jaime.

Started treatment

He has been enrolled at Huddinge Hospital a few days back and has begun a five-week treatment. He is now in day two of treatment.

- I am fine and started my treatment yesterday. In total, I get cell poisoning for about 11 hours a day. With the corona, I and the staff wear mask every time they come into my room. They take it very seriously and have updated all about major and minor security routines.

How does it feel to have found a match?

- It obviously feels great to me, but also to everyone who has fought for me. It means so much to me how much my friends and other nice people helped spread the campaigns. I would like to extend an extra big thank you to all the care staff at the Hematologist, CAST and the home care that kept me alive during this time. They really did everything they could and a little more! They have really struggled so much and it is clear that they care about their patients. Infinite thanks!

What do you know about your donor?

- I actually know nothing about my donor, but I hope the person applies to hear from them in the future as my friends have fought hard with a reward to be given to my rescuer in need!
