Ichiro Matsui, mayor of Osaka , Japan's third-largest city, has been attacked on social media for suggesting that men should shop during the coronavirus pandemic because undecided women, he notes, spend too much time on it.

As in Spain, with the declaration of a state of emergency in Japan, the authorities have recommended that residents make their purchases less frequently and limit close contacts as much as possible.

In line with these recommendations, the mayor of Osaka said Thursday that men should buy because women "take time to look at the products and hesitate between this and that." And he added: "while the men go for the articles that they asked for and they leave." So he said: "I think it would be good for them to buy, to avoid human contact as much as possible."

Upon his words, Matsui acknowledged that his analysis might seem outdated, but stated that this was the case in his own family. Shortly after, criticism came on social networks where many users accused the councilman of emitting words "loaded with prejudice towards women."

According to data from the national broadcaster NHK, there are almost 1,500 cases of coronavirus in Osaka and the surrounding prefecture, making the city the second most affected after Tokyo.
