Jean-Michel Blanquer announced Tuesday a three-step back-to-school plan for elementary and secondary. But many questions remain unanswered about the concrete organization of this differentiated return of pupils to classes.

Jean-Michel Blanquer announced it Tuesday: schoolchildren, middle school and high school students will probably resume their way to their school from May 11. But beware: they will not resume lessons as before confinement, all together, in full classes. Barrier gestures, canteen, playground… Many gray areas persist within three weeks of this unprecedented comeback in the middle of the coronavirus crisis. Europe 1 takes stock.

How will the school take place?

What is frozen is the return spread over three weeks. First, the week of May 11, the kindergarten, CP and CM2 schoolchildren will return. Then, the week of May 18, secondary school students from Sixth and Third, as well as high school students from Première and those from Terminale. Finally, CE1, CE2, CM1, Fifth, Fourth and Second will return the week of May 25.

Marie and Simon have three daughters, 5, 8 and 11 years old: each takes over on a different date. "On May 11, we will all get up to be able to accompany the little one to school, then we will class for the two older ones, then we will pick up the little one, who will only have class in the morning to leave the teacher make the class to the other half, "anticipates Marie, speech therapist who has no plans to resume work immediately.

And in the classes?

Classes should not have more than 15 students at the same time. No more recess with all classes at the same time in the yard. Parents and teachers are waiting for details on the concrete organization of the courses, but several avenues have emerged. Classes could be split in two, with one group in the morning and another in the afternoon, or every other day or every other week, depending on the wishes of each school.

Clearly, there are four configurations: a group in the classroom, a group in the home school, with two other possibilities to keep the children who are not in class, namely study or sports activities. Return to class will not be compulsory for children whose parents are overly concerned, but if and only if their children can continue to attend school from a distance.

Will the students have lunch in the canteen?

It will depend a lot on the configuration of the establishment. In schools and colleges where there are not too many students and enough supervisory staff, the maintenance of the canteen is possible, with the introduction of barrier gestures at the entrance of the refectory. For establishments where the premises are not suitable, this will be a picnic for everyone: either a meal prepared by the parents, or a sandwich service set up in the schools.

How do teachers react?

Not very well: they were surprised by the timing of these announcements. The teachers were consulted once last week by Jean-Michel Blanquer, which is too little according to them. "We still have no health guarantees on the conditions for the recovery," deplores Sophie Venetitay, deputy secretary general of the SNES-FSU union. "And then we have this figure of 15 students per class which also poses a lot of questions: how do we enforce social distancing in fairly small rooms? What do we do with the other students in the class? Jean-Michel Blanquer evokes the possibility that they are in a room of permanence, but these rooms will quickly be crowded if half of the college or the high school is in this room. " To have more health guarantees, the teachers' unions are asking for the opinion of the Scientific Committee on this new school year.
