"Elephant legs" thin into "chopstick legs"? Studies show that people with thick thighs have a reduced risk of hypertension

Sino-Singapore Online, April 21 (Chen Jing, Shi Jiaqi) If you are still struggling to thin "elephant legs" into "chopstick legs", a research result of Xinhua Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine may allow you change one's mind.

Xinhua Hospital disclosed on the 21st that the research team of Professor Su Qing and Professor Yang Zhen of the Department of Endocrinology of the hospital found that in a community epidemiological survey based on nearly 10,000 people, compared with people with thin thighs, they were among overweight and obese people. However, the risk of having high blood pressure in people with thick thighs decreased, by nearly 30% and 50%, respectively.

It is reported that although obesity is a state of excessive body fat, not all fat stored in the body is harmless and not beneficial. Among overweight and obese people, thick thighs are more likely to have blood pressure and cardiovascular health than slender legs.

The study found that people with thick waists and thin legs (apple-shaped body) had the highest risk of hypertension, while people with thin waists and thick legs (pear-shaped body) had the lowest risk of hypertension. The research results have been published in the Endocrine Connections of the European Society of Endocrinology.

Hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases, affecting many people in the world. Because patients with hypertension have few early symptoms, more than half of patients with hypertension do not know their hypertension status. Some existing studies have shown that the measurement of the human body, especially the circumference, is a method of early detection of some chronic diseases, and this method is simple, convenient, harmless, and low cost. Therefore, the endocrine team of Xinhua Hospital focused on the relationship between thigh circumference and hypertension. Thigh circumference refers to the horizontal circumference of the most bulged part of the inner thigh muscle or the horizontal circumference of the thigh passing through the hip groove.

Professor Su Qing explained: "The distribution of body fat in different parts has very different effects on cardiovascular metabolism. Contrary to a series of harmful effects accompanied by too much fat deposited in the abdominal viscera, fat stored in the legs can secrete a lot of Beneficial bioactive substances to regulate blood pressure and vascular function and maintain metabolic balance in the body. "This expert said that skeletal muscle is the main part of energy intake. Too little skeletal muscle mass in the leg may induce or promote abnormal energy metabolism. The amount of muscle mass is essential for cardiovascular metabolism and the maintenance of life activities.

The results of this study suggest that those with an apple-shaped body (thick waist with thin legs) should pay attention to blood pressure status, and regularly conduct blood pressure testing and cardiovascular disease screening.
