About one in three Finns might think of moving to Tampere or Helsinki, says a recent study by Taloustutkimus. Tampere is also considered to be the best place to live in its overall image. Jyväskylä and Turku are next.
- Tampere is still the most coveted destination. We want to come and stay in Tampere from all the cities in our country. We have been working on this for a long time for several years and will continue to do so. Tampere must also take care of its holding power, so that the city is a permanent home for visitors, where it is easy to stay and attach, says Tampere Mayor Lauri Lyly.
Pirkanmaa was otherwise very successful in the Willingness to Move and the Image of Cities / Municipalities 2020 survey. According to respondents living in the whole of Western Finland, Pirkkala was the third best city after Tampere and Jyväskylä.
In the eyes of the whole kingdom, in addition to Pirkkala, Lempäälä and Kangasala also appear to be interesting destinations. Kangasala was among the five most popular cities with a population of 30–50,000. Lempäälä and Pirkkala were on the top 5 list of cities with less than 30,000 inhabitants.
According to the survey, 37 percent of Finns might think that they would move to Tampere. The percentage is the same as in the previous study, conducted in 2018.
Next on the list is the rising Helsinki (32 percent). Espoo (23%) has risen third past Turku and Jyväskylä (both 22%). Two years ago, Turku was second with 28 percent and Jyväskylä third with 27 percent.
Tampere's ranking at the top is a significant result in the sense that Tampere is the only city of research to be among the top 5 most sought-after migration destinations throughout Finland.
On the other hand, Tampere's overall rating had fallen from 8.17 to 7.98 two years ago.
The study also asked about moving intentions. Eighty-five percent of respondents say they will change at least fairly certain over the next five years. 23% of respondents do not know how to take a position in one direction or another, 35% are unlikely to change and 24% will not change in any way.
The main reasons for moving if you were now moving to a place of residence are good services, location, workplace, comfortable living environment and housing prices.
The study involves 61 of Finland's largest cities and municipalities. The size limit is 20,000 inhabitants, in addition to which there are a few municipalities aiming at the limit of 20,000 inhabitants.
