  • Witnesses to the pandemic Israel: state of emergency without war

What seemed like a miracle two months ago has been made official on Monday with the signing of the agreement between the Israeli Prime Minister in office, Benjamin Netanyahu and the centrist leader Benny Gantz to form a broad rotation government ending 484 days of political blockade and three close elections .

Between the first (April 9, 2019) and the last (March 2), the internal division between those who love Bibi and those who detest him has deepened to unsuspected levels. The agreement, which allows the veteran conservative leader to remain prime minister until he is replaced by Gantz in November 2021 , does not end internal polarization but provides more ways to deal with the lethal economic effects of the coronavirus.

Citing the state of emergency caused by Covid-19 (dramatic increase in unemployment and 173 deaths to date), frightened by a few elections and accompanied only by 17 of the 33 deputies of the centrist bloc 'Blue and White', Gantz gave the Last step to cross the surprising Rubicon, agree a coalition with his conservative rival and be Minister of Defense for the next 18 months .

His former partner, centrist Yair Lapid, will be the new opposition leader in the Knesset , holding firm to his greatest principle - shared so far by Gantz - of not being in a government headed by a prime minister accused of corruption.
