Wearing masks, waving black flags and keeping two meters away, thousands of Israelis demonstrated against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu under strict coronavirus restrictions on Sunday.

Netanyahu, who denies wrongdoing, is charged in three corruption cases. It is also negotiating a power-sharing agreement with rival Benny Gantz to form a coalition government to end a year of political stalemate after three inconclusive elections.

Demonstrations are permitted in Israel as long as coronavirus restrictions are respected. That is, the participants stay away from each other and wear masks.

Under the slogan "Let's save democracy," protesters called on Gantz's Blue and White party not to join a coalition led by a prime minister accused of corruption.

Gantz has campaigned for a clean government, but said the coronavirus crisis has forced him to return to his electoral promise.

A Reuters agency photographer estimated that a few thousand protesters attended the rally in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square. Also, the Israeli media calculate the figure of about 2,000 people.

Israel has reported more than 13,000 coronavirus cases and 172 deaths. A partial blockade has confined most Israelis to their homes, forced them to close businesses and sent unemployment to around 26%. Some restrictions have been eased since Saturday.
