28 November 2018 After twelve consecutive draws, an absolute record, the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen won his consecutive world chess quarter, also winning the third of the four quick playoff matches against the American rival Fabiano Caruana.

After Carlsen's first two wins, Caruana would have had to win the other two remaining games, with identical typology (a maximum total time for each player of 25 minutes, with an increase of 10 seconds with each move) in order to reach a new draw ; in this case a series of other quick matches would have been used with even shorter times (five minutes for each player plus three seconds for each move).

Carlsen was chasing the fourth consecutive world title, while Caruana would have given the United States the first victory after the legendary one of Bobby Fischer, champion in 1972 in the "match of the century" against the Russian Boris Spassky.
