They arrived in the Sharidat area in the vicinity of Tarhuna and took control of areas on the outskirts of the city.

It also opened a new axis from Gharyan, southwest of Tripoli, towards Tarhuna, and stormed new sites.

Shelling and battles
For his part, Colonel Muhammad Qanunu, a spokesman for the forces of the National Accord Government, said that the Libyan Air Force bombed five targets of Haftar's forces, including back-up positions supporting it near Tarhuna.

Earlier, Kanounou stated that their forces had killed eight Haftar forces and captured others while advancing in the vicinity of the city of Tarhuna (about 80 km southeast of Tripoli) as part of the "Storm of Peace" operation launched by the Al-Wefaq government recently, to control the cities and areas under Haftar.

Kanounou said in a press briefing that Al-Wefaq forces stormed a camp in the Al-Hawatim area on the outskirts of Tarhuna, and captured 12 militants inside it, and looted five vehicles. Before that, four armed men were captured, and three armed vehicles were destroyed.

The Libyan military spokesman added that progress towards the city is taking place according to a military plan drawn up by the Peace Storm Operations Room, and that Al-Wefaq Aviation bombed sites of what it described as militias in Tarhuna City, noting that the operation came in response to the continuous shelling of the capital's neighborhoods.

Al-Jazeera correspondent Ahmed Khalifa stated that the operation started this morning, and that Al-Wefaq forces had taken control of areas located on the outskirts of Tarhuna, including women and women.

Fighting axes
The correspondent added that Al-Wefaq forces opened heavy artillery fire at the fighting axes south of Tripoli, in preparation for progress towards Tarhuna.

He continued that, in conjunction with the start of the operation, he could hear fierce shelling in the southern suburbs of Tripoli, where battles have been taking place for more than a year, between internationally recognized government forces and the Haftar militia.

Al-Jazeera correspondent pointed out that the city of Tarhuna is considered the starting point for the attacks on Tripoli, and it contains a human tank supporting Haftar, and it is also a vital supply line for his forces, as weapons and equipment come to them from the Al-Jafra base in central Libya.

If the Al-Wefaq forces control the city of Tarhuna - which is dominated by the so-called 9th brigade of Haftar's forces - this will be a qualitative progress made by the army of the Al-Wefaq government after its recent restoration of the West Coast.
