The Inspection for Healthcare and Care, IVO, has received several tips linked to the priorities of corona patients in intensive care in the Stockholm region. Among other things regarding the Karolinska University Hospital.

- Some tips are about prioritizing kidney disease to intensive care. Based on these indications, we choose to start up a supervision at Karolinska University Hospital. We will now review the business, says Linda Almqvist, chief legal officer at IVO.

Prioritize different

But the tips, which IVO describes as serious, are not just about Karolinska. Several of them testify that hospitals in the region have different priorities when it comes to who receives intensive care.

“We have repeatedly found that those patients who are deemed to be in need of respiratory care for a long time (eg a couple of weeks) are denied intensive care with the argument that a younger patient with better prognosis may need the place in a few days, when the intensive care sites in the region is ending, "says one of the tips that SVT has taken note of.

Meeting with the region

As a result of the information received by IVO, they called the chief physicians in the region to a meeting last week.

After the meeting, an e-mail, signed by chief physician Johan Bratt, was sent to the hospitals where it stated, among other things: "In a situation when we have more than 70 vacant IVA places in the region, it is important that the criteria for intensive care are not too tight".

On Friday, IVO and the region's chief physicians Johan Bratt and Elda Sparrelid had a follow-up meeting.

- We have received confirmation that the chief physicians have clarified what applies to the National Board of Health's priority guidelines. That is, they do not need to be applied because there is currently access to IVA sites, says Linda Almqvist at IVO.
