La Confinouze, the beer of the confined imagined by the managers of La Pépite. - The Nugget

Take advantage of boredom. A short week ago, Victor, Théo and Kamil, the managers of the Lille bar La Pépite, had a crazy idea. Their establishment closed due to the epidemic of coronavirus, they wanted to mark the blow by creating “Confinouze”, the beer of the confined. An original initiative, but not so simple to implement, especially while staying at home.

"The beer of confined people will not have a musty taste," promises Victor Vercamer, one of the three managers of La Pépite bar. With his colleagues, all from the metropolis, Victor opened his establishment two years ago, place Sébastopol. And bam, here is the coronavirus tile falling on their heads, forcing them to close shop. "There is no return of money and, if certain charges are frozen, there are still must be paid immediately, including part of the salary of the three employees," said the young man.

"It's not easy to brew a beer from a distance"

Besides the economic aspect, there is also the fact that the three friends are bored. So they mixed in their heads the arrival of spring and confinement in a concentrate which will take the form of a beer. “We wanted an ephemeral product linked to the event. Something festival since it will not be released before May or June ”, continues Victor. They contacted the Bellenaert brewery in Bailleul to submit their idea. And the idea pleased. Thus, a first brew of a thousand liters of Confinouze was launched for an expected delivery on May 26. “It's not easy to brew a beer from a distance, by phone, without being able to taste it. The brewer explained the recipe to us, it will be a surprise, ”says the manager of La Pépite.

For reasons related to confinement and because they are not the only ones in the crisis, the partners decided to enhance the premises. Ingredients, manufacturing, labels, everything will be done in the North with seasonal products. The total cost of the brew is estimated at 3,000 euros. This is where crowdfunding comes in.

The online kitty, launched last Wednesday, quickly met with unexpected success. “We expected to raise 500 euros in presale the first day. We finally did the triple, people hung on, it's really nice, “enthuses Victor. This Thursday, the amount is close to 5,500 euros and the three friends have revised their ambitions upwards. “We are targeting 6,000 euros. Half will be used to pay the brew, another part to pay the charges and to generate some cash. The rest will be donated to caregivers, ”he says. This donation, he estimates at around 20% of the total amount raised. But, taken aback by the popular craze, they have not yet had time to think about the form in which the money will be returned. Perhaps an open bar at La Pépite?
