Preparation of meals, cleaning, shopping, homework for children ... Even in confinement with their spouse, women still continue to assume most of the household and educational tasks alone, regretted the Secretary of State for Equality between women and men, Marlène Schiappa, in an interview with Le Point this Thursday.

Marlène Schiappa fears the “silent exhaustion” of women, who have to juggle between school at home, more meals and telecommuting. And the Harris poll cited by the Secretary of State is worrying: 58% of women estimate that they spend more time than their spouse doing household chores during this period of confinement.

A “multiplied mental burden”

A figure that did not "surprise" Marlène Schiappa: "54% of women devote more than two hours a day to domestic or educational tasks, against only 35% of men". "Statistically, women and men therefore do not live in the same confinement," she explains. And with containment, all meals are taken at home. If the budget has increased, meal preparation is also on the rise: "In 63% of families, meals are mainly prepared by women during confinement," warns the Secretary of State, who estimates that women have a “multiplied mental load”.

"It is mainly the women who manage the schedules, maintain the link with the teachers, settle disputes between the children," she lists. The fear of Marlène Schiappa? The “silent exhaustion” of women at the end of confinement “by the accumulation of professional and domestic tasks”. "This survey shows that 20% of women say they are dissatisfied while 96% of men without children say they are very happy with this distribution of roles. We understand why, ”she quips.
