Corona effect: Sales of sex toys are rising

Countries such as Colombia, Denmark and the United Kingdom have already noticed it. The corona effect on the sale of sex toys. And in New York, the government's advice to enjoy sex without spreading covid-19 is that "you are your safest sex partner." 

The desire for sex toys is also visible in Sweden. In one month, sales at RFSU's online store increased by nearly 40 percent.

- It is mainly sex toys, but also condoms and lubricants and tests for STDs or pregnancy. What is most sold are air pressure vibrators, says Katarina Knutz, CEO of RFSU.

Purchasing behavior has also changed as we stay home. Previously, most intimate products were purchased on Sunday and Monday nights - now the Swedes shop every day of the week, even daytime, according to RFSU.

- Sex is health so it is good that you take care of your health in this way, it generally promotes public health. We hope that it will continue and that you discover new products that you can use yourself or with your partner, says Katarina Knutz.

The sex shop Mshop has also increased its sales. Since the Swedish Public Health Agency called on the Swedes to work from home, online sales have increased by about 30 percent. 

"We mainly see an increase in products that are classically used for masturbation," says Evelina Odle, PR manager.

The online store Vuxen.se, which specializes in intimate products, has also noticed a “corona effect”. The sales increase began on March 22, the same day that Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S) spoke to the nation. 

“A product stands out a bit, the 'luxury dolls' for men, full-sized dolls that cost from SEK 15,000 and up. Normally, maybe it goes on average one a week, now we have almost sold one a day on average, ”writes the company's CEO Michael Ahlén to SVT News. 

Mshop has done the same search. 

- On the classic male side, we have seen an increase in masturbation toys that stimulate the penis, but also among sex dolls, says Evelina Odle.

She believes there are several reasons why sales of sex toys have skyrocketed during the corona crisis. 

- People are bored and want to have fun. But it can also be that you take the time to make it cozy at home. Even as you re-furnish or start doing yoga, you want to take care of your sex life. If you live with a partner, you can take the time to find something fun instead of arguing about the dishes.
