The audience has rewarded the deployment that Canal Sur Televisión is carrying out with news and special programs about the coronavirus pandemic. The health emergency situation and the lockdown at home to which the whole country is obliged, since the Government decreed the state of alarm on March 14, has triggered television consumption in homes. All the chains have seen their audience increase, but the increase in Andalusian public television is more significant.

On March 12, when all the communities decided that they were going to close nurseries, schools, institutes and universities, in order to try to stop the Covid-19 infections, Canal Sur reached its season record , during the broadcast of the special of the evening news about the coronavirus. Between 19:53 and 20:55 , there were 1,416,000 viewers at some point in the broadcast of this special, which achieved a screen share of 29.9% and led its broadcast time slot.

This percentage far exceeds Canal Sur Televisión's screen share, which in March was 7.9% , according to data provided by the channel's management to EL MUNDO. That share is the best of the quarter, but it is below the mark of January 2019, when it reached 8.9% , the best figure in the last fifteen months.

However, in number of viewers, this March is the record audience of the last 15 months, registering 2,280,000 viewers of daily average accumulated audience, compared to 2,107,000 in January 2019, when the screen share was recorded highest in the last 15 months. This is due to the increase in television consumption in all households.

The meritorious 29.9% of screen share reached by Canal Sur Televisión on March 12th represents the best audience record achieved by the new team that runs the public network, with journalist Juande Mellado as general director of Radio and Television de Andalucía (RTVA) since July 2019. The change of government in the Junta de Andalucía, after the autonomic elections of last December 2, 2018, led to the replacement in the leadership of the public network. Thus, Canal Sur began a new stage with a Government of the PP and Citizens, after 30 years on the air always with the PSOE in power.

Other news programs on Canal Sur about the coronavirus crisis have also garnered good audience results, well above the network average, such as the one broadcast on March 14, between 19:35 and 21:50, which achieved a 14.7% of screen share and 1,239,000 viewers; and also the broadcast on March 13, between 19:27 and 20:30, which reached a share of 14.6% and 708,000 viewers .

The connections with the press conferences offered live from the Moncloa and the Palacio de San Telmo in Seville, seat of the Presidency of the Junta de Andalucía, also record audience data above the chain average, which shows the Viewers' interest in the coronavirus crisis and the measures governments are taking to deal with the pandemic.

In cumulative audience , which records the number of viewers who have seen the program at some point, Canal Sur is the television that has grown the most in March, if the first half of the month (between March 1 and March 11) is compared with the second (from March 12 to 31, when the special programs on the Covid-19 have multiplied).

Analyzing that period, Canal Sur increased its accumulated audience by 33.7% , going from 4,666,000 viewers in the first half of the month to 6,239,999 in the second half, that is, 1,573,000 more viewers , according to the figures offered by the management of the Andalusian public network.

Ranking of televisions

The next chain that increased the most was La 1 , with 21.4% more in its accumulated audience, which went from 5,452,000 viewers to 6,618,000 in the second half of March, that is, 1,166,000 viewers plus. Behind is La Sexta , with an increase of 19%, with a jump from 5,435,000 viewers to 6,469,000. In fourth position is Telecinco , with a rise of 17.8% (from 5,467,000 viewers to 6,442,000); the fifth the chain that rose the most is Cuatro , with an increase of 17.5% (from 5,598,000 to 6,575,000); and Antena 3 in last position, with an increase of 14.1% (from 6,044,000 viewers to 6,895,000).

Regarding the daily average , Canal Sur is also the chain that rises the most in Andalusia, above the rest of public and private televisions, since there are a total of 2,569,000 viewers daily average on health alert days, with a increase of 815,000 people, which represents an additional 46.5% .

If the daily average audience and the screen share are analyzed, Canal Sur is the third television that increases the most in Andalusia. The Andalusian chain's share went from 6.9% in the first half of March to 8.3%, which represents an additional 20.3%. Ahead are La Sexta, which registered an increase of 29.5% (from 6.1% to 7.9%); and La 1, which went from a share of 7.7% to 9.3%, an additional 20.3%. Tele 5, Cuatro and Antena Tres lowered their screen share, although Tele 5 remains the most watched network, with a share of 15%.

Petitions for resignation

Not everything was good news for the management of Canal Sur. Journalists affiliated with the CCOO union, UGT-RTVA and the Union of Journalists have demanded the replacement of the director of Informational Contents of Andalusian public television, Álvaro Zancajo , whom they accuse of "manipulation" and "using for partisan purposes" to the chain public.

Zancajo, who worked as a journalist for TVE and Antena 3 before he was signed by Canal Sur, has spent less than two months as the director of News, after replacing Javier Domínguez , a veteran professional of Andalusian television who only held the position for six months .

Sources from the RTVA leadership told this newspaper that Zancajo's resignation is being requested with data that does not correspond to reality. Thus, the unions have reproached him for interviewing the PP-A general secretary, Loles López , during the informative News 1 of March 24, but they "forget" that representatives of all political parties have also participated. In fact, José Fiscal , spokesman for the parliamentary group of the PSOE-A, was interviewed during News 1 on March 23.
