There were more than 300 inmates of the Toledo prison in Ocaña 1 who for several hours have risen up against the authorities. Tables and chairs have been burned at the doors of the galleries where they are locked up. They mainly demanded sanitary improvements in the penitentiary complex to face the coronavirus epidemic.

According to prison sources, the 'mutineers' wanted the prison management to implement disinfection plans for the compound and less stringent exit plans to the courtyard.

Since the epidemic started, the Ministry of the Interior decided to end the permits so that the prisoners do not go out and cut the risks of contagion of the prison population. And it also ended with family visits. Instead, he put in place a plan for the inmates to have more phone calls with their own. He even distributed 240 mobile phones in the centers so that the prisoners could communicate more regularly with their own. However, this afternoon, about 300 inmates understood that these measures were not sufficient and that, in addition, their health situation was not armored against the coronavirus.

Led by half a dozen Spanish prisoners, who became the spokesmen for the protest, they set fire to prison material, creating a bonfire that was visible even from outside the prison. The protest lasted for two hours. Smoke filled several of the galleries. The revolt was focused on medical care and the decisions of the center's management.

As union sources explain, part of the protest also spread due to the lack of drugs in the centers, which is causing some inmates to have a much more aggressive attitude. As prison sources recall, a significant part of the drug in prisons enters visitors.

Now, once these visits are restricted, the drug no longer arrives, according to these sources, and the prisoners who consume it are more upset.

Little by little, officials have managed to calm things down. In fact, after the first contacts, only fifty prisoners remained in the protest, who were still led by the six Spanish prisoners. Just half an hour ago, the latter have also deposed their attitude and the leaders of this revolt have been isolated in the prison.
