The inspiration comes from Singapore, which took the same technological means to curb the spread of infection in the country, Reuters writes.

The app that Germany may be launching would alert people if they have been near a person who has been confirmed to be infected. The distance the app will respond to is two meters and the meeting should be longer than 15 minutes, the BBC writes.

According to the developers, privacy will be respected, as no personal data or location information will be used and no data will be stored for more than 21 days.

Eight European countries are working together to create this app. Besides Germany, there are Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Austria, writes Politico.

Russia and the United Kingdom are also looking at infection wounds through appeals.

In South Korea, they took the step further and mapped people's movements with the help of debit cards, mobile phones and other digital place markers.
