08 April 2020 Farewell to the chains of Sant'Antonio, at least on Whatsapp. To try to stem the spread of hoaxes on the coronavirus, the messaging service has announced that from today it will be possible to forward messages to only one user at a time. This is the second move made by the Facebook subsidiary to stop the phenomenon of online disinformation. A year ago the company had entered a double arrow to allow users to recognize the messages forwarded many times. But multiple submission was still allowed, but limited to five users at a time. Of course, not all forwarded messages are hoaxes. But recently, the company explains, "we have seen a significant increase in the amount of messages forwarded. Many users have reported that they are annoyed by these messages and that they fear they may contribute to the spread of fake news." WhatsApp, which has over two billion users worldwide, started to limit forwarding in July 2018, after a series of lynchings that took place in India which, according to local authorities, were triggered by some messages shared in the groups of the app . Before then, users were able to forward a message to 256 people and were not labeled as forwarders. The function will be active in the next few hours, the note concludes.
