Christian Bonnet died. The former Minister of the Interior under the chairmanship of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing died Tuesday at 98 years old in a retirement home in Vannes, his family informed. His disappearance is unrelated to the coronavirus pandemic. He died of "his beautiful death," said his granddaughter Aziliz de Veyrinas.

This man who said "having entered politics as one enters religion" continued to be interested in public affairs after 46 years of career even if he had no commitment, testified another member of his family.

Christian Bonnet was nine years in government, under the presidencies of Georges Pompidou and Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. Secretary of State for Housing (1972-1974) under the authority of Prime Minister Pierre Messmer, he then managed the Agriculture portfolio under Jacques Chirac and Raymond Barre (1974-1977) before investing in Place Beauvau under Raymond Barre (1977-1981).

This last post which he considered as "his marshal's stick" will be notably marked by the death of Jacques Mesrine, shot dead by police officers at Porte de Clignancourt, and the attack on the synagogue on rue Copernic (4 dead and 46 injured) , in Paris.

In the wake of Giscard

Member of the Morbihan for 18 years (1956-1972 and from 1981 to 1983), this former director of a sardine cannery in Quiberon had entered the Assembly with Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, whose political path he followed until 'to his defeat in 1981 against François Mitterrand. Christian Bonnet was also a senator for Morbihan for 18 years (1983-2001).

Mayor of Carnac for 32 years and general councilor of Belle-Ile-en-Mer for 43 years, this former member of the Faculty of Law and Sciences-po Paris had six children, three of whom died.
