In the midst of a coronavirus epidemic, the canteen at the seat of the European Parliament in Brussels will provide a thousand meals every day to the most disadvantaged and the nursing staff, the institution announced on Wednesday.

"Our kitchens will prepare 1,000 meals a day for distribution to those in need and to healthcare workers to help them with their work," said European Parliament President David Sassoli in a video recording. These meals can be eaten on site in the refectory of the Parliament, or distributed in other fora, either to vulnerable people such as the homeless, or to medical personnel on request.

The strength of Europe is its solidarity, and as @Europarl_FR we want to continue to give a concrete example. Our kitchens in Brussels will prepare 1000 meals a day for people in need as well as for those who work tirelessly in our hospitals pic.twitter.com/QH6nJ0YEXX

This arrangement is made under an agreement with the Brussels region and in connection with the Samusocial aid association of the city, said a spokesperson. Furthermore, the Parliament makes available, if necessary, a space to accommodate people within the confinement of vulnerable populations discharged from the hospital but who still have to remain in isolation.

The European Parliament, which has headquarters in Brussels and Strasbourg, has already made its buildings available in the Alsatian capital in eastern France to host a Covid-19 screening center and consultation center. It also makes its fleet of vehicles available in the two cities for the transport of medical equipment, for example.
